What is neuropsychological testing?

Neuropsychological testing is a way to better understand how your brain works and how it may be affecting your daily life. Through a series of questions, activities, and assessments, our clinicians can uncover your unique strengths and challenges. This kind of testing can provide clarity, guide treatment, and help you or your loved one get the right support.

We offer testing for:

  • ADHD

  • Autism

  • Learning disabilities

  • Dyslexia

  • OCD

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Trauma

This is not a comprehensive list. Our evaluations are designed to get to the root cause of your symptoms and empower you to take the best path forward.

What to Expect

Number of Appointments

We typically schedule between three and five appointments. The number of appointments depends on the reason you are seeking assessment. We aim to complete the entire process, from first to last appointment, within six weeks. This is not a guarantee but a goal.

First Appointment

During your first appointment we will collect background information and history, as well as clarify your symptoms. This will help us to identify the number of appointments necessary to complete your assessment.

Testing Appointments

During testing appointments, neuropsychological tests are administered in our office or online. These tests analyze problem-solving abilities and identify strengths and weaknesses. Your data is statistically analyzed and a diagnosis can be determined from your outcomes.

Final Review + Personalized Recommendations

During your final appointment, we will review the results of your assessment and provide personalized recommendations.

Assessments for Children and Adults

1

Child Evaluations
( Under18 years of age)

When evaluating children, we first meet with you and your child to collect information about your child's developmental history.

During the assessment process your child will complete a series of cognitive and neuropsychological tests in order to clarify the root of their distress.  Our process is streamlined and some portions of the assessment are completed online. However, most of the time, children must complete testing in-person at our Lombard office location.

Typically, the administration of tests can take between one and three appointments to complete. Each appointment is between two to three hours in duration.

Finally, we meet with you and your child to provide your evaluation results. We provide a formal explanation of your child's diagnosis and a list of personalized recommendations.

2

Adult Evaluations
(Over 18 years of age)

During the assessment process you will complete cognitive and neuropsychological tests in order to clarify the root of your distress.  Our process is quick, easy, and can be completed fully online for most adults.

Diagnostic assessments begin with an initial appointment to collect information about your background and history.

Next, we meet to administer neuropsychological testing using screen-sharing abilities and our online platform. The administration of tests can take one or more appointments to complete. Each appointment is between one and three hours in duration.

Finally, we provide your evaluation results with a formal explanation of your diagnosis and a list of personalized recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions

1 / How much does testing cost?

If you’re using insurance, your exact cost will depend on your plan and coverage details. We bill for all services provided, and costs may vary based on the type of evaluation or therapy you receive. If you’re paying out of pocket, we outline our fees here.

2 / How long does testing take?

The number of sessions needed for a diagnostic evaluation can vary depending on your unique needs, which we’ll discuss during your intake. While some assessments may be completed in a single visit, most are spread across three sessions (including the intake) to ensure accuracy and comfort.

Because of the thoughtful analysis and number of appointments involved, it can take up to six weeks for final results to be completed.

3 / How will I get my testing results?

After testing, your examiner devotes significant time to carefully reviewing and interpreting the results. This process may include consulting with colleagues or supervisors to make sure your report is as thorough and helpful as possible. The final report is designed to highlight both your strengths and areas where support may be most beneficial. Once your results are ready, you’ll meet with your examiner to walk through the findings, including practical recommendations, together.

4 / How do I know what kind of testing I should do?

This will be determined in collaboration with your clinician. The first appointment is meant to collect the information needed to make this decision. Typically, a standard assessment will cover all of the testing needed to arrive at a diagnosis. In some cases, additional testing may be necessary for specific diagnosis such as Autism and Learning Disabilities.

5 / What’s the difference between a neuropsychological and a psychological test? Does Lotus Bloom Psychology offer both?

Lotus Bloom Psychology offers both neuropsychological and psychological assessments. Both are types of assessments that evaluate mental health and cognitive abilities, but they differ in focus and methods. Neuropsychological assessments utilize tests that obtain data on cognitive functioning including memory, attention, language, problem solving, executive functions, etc. Psychological assessments utilize tests that obtain data on emotional and behavioral functioning including personality and mood.

6 / Do you provide IEPs?

No, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is provided by your public school system and determines if your child is eligible for supportive services within the school setting. But we can support the process.

Here’s what we can do:

  • Provide assessments that schools can use as evidence when deciding if your child is eligible for services

  • Offer a formal clinical diagnosis (something school psychologists cannot provide) to strengthen your case for support

  • Attend IEP meetings with you to help advocate for your child and ensure their needs are understood

7 / Are your assessments in-person or online?

We offer both in-person assessments at our Lombard, IL office and virtual assessments for current Illinois residents. Our virtual assessments are currently offered only to adults.

To receive telehealth services, the client must be located in Illinois at the time the services are rendered.

8 / How do virtual/online assessments work?

You will meet with one of our clinical psychologists using our online platform. During the assessment you will share your computer screen and our team member will be able to administer assessments online.

There are other portions of the virtual testing process that you will complete on your own time online. During your first appointment we will provide both verbal and written instructions on how to complete your portions of the online assessment. We use HIPPA compliant platforms specifically designed for online assessments.

9 / Are virtual assessments accurate?

Yes. Our technology partners are scientifically valid and have been extensively researched to provide precise, reliable results. We currently utilize Creyos, Pearson, and other robust platforms for our virtual testing.
